How We Read examines the first encounters of MA Graphic Media Design (MAGMD) students with graphic design literature, uncovering preconceived notions shaped by their educational histories. Edited by Evie McNulty, Ge Gan, Lauren Housden, and Sruthi Nair, the book presents an AI-facilitated comparative review based on data from 2023-24 MA GMD participants. It analyses three reading lists—Seminal, Disciplinary, and Positional—exploring the role of design literature, establishing historical and theoretical connections, and personal engagement with these ideas.

Analysing several readings completed throughout the unit, the publication analyses the collective reviews of the MAGMD students and their reactions to 26 periodicals, all presenting diverse theories about design and its purpose. The readings include works by Weingart, Tschihold, Groten, Rand, Barthes, and several others and have been classified under Seminal, Disciplinary and Positional– dependent on the theories and concepts put forth by the authors.

Developed by Carlos Romo-Melgar and Bryony Quinn, this project stems from the Literature Review module at LCC, designed to help students shape their critical perspectives on design writing and its relevance to their practice.

The different classifications of periodicals are divided into 3 main chapters in the publication. Keeping a consistent layout, the publication uses colour and typefaces to differentiate between each section.

The publication focuses on the students’ thoughts, their agreements and disagreements with the authors of the texts, and their peers.
